    The Architecture and Performance Evaluation of iSCSI-Based United Storage Network Merging NAS and SAN

    With the ever increasing volume of data in networks, the traditional storage architecture is greatly challenged; more and more people pay attention to network storage. Currently, the main technology of network storage is represented by NAS (Network Attached Storage) and SAN (Storage Area Network). They are different, but mutually complementary and used under different circumstances; however, both NAS and SAN may be needed in the same company. To reduce the TOC (total of cost), for easier implementation, etc., people hope to merge the two technologies. Additionally, the main internetworking technology of SAN is the Fibre Channel; however, the major obstacles are in its poor interoperability, lack of trained staff, high implementation costs, etc. To solve the above-mentioned issues, this paper creatively introduces a novel storage architecture called USN (United Storage Networks), which uses the iSCSI to build the storage network, and merges the NAS and SAN techniques supplying the virtues and overcoming the drawbacks of both, and provides both file I/O and block I/O service simultaneously

    A Novel Trust-Aware Composite Semantic Web Service Selection Approach

    The functional characteristics and the nonfunctional properties of service profile always play very important roles in composite semantic web service selection approach. But the credibility of this information cannot be guaranteed. This paper established a novel trust degree model of this information. Based on this model, the trust degrees can be calculated from execution log and user experience evaluation of candidate web services. Then the paper proposes a new composite semantic web service selection approach based on this credible information. Finally, we present two experiments to prove that the new approach can avoid the influence of exaggerated and unauthentic information effectively and accurately

    SPA: On-Line Availability Upgrades for Parity-based RAIDs through Supplementary Parity Augmentations

    In this paper, we propose a simple but powerful on-line availability upgrade mechanism, Supplementary Parity Augmentations (SPA), to address the availability issue for parity-based RAID systems. The basic idea of SPA is to store and update the supplementary parity units on one or a few newly augmented spare disks for on-line RAID systems in the operational mode, thus achieving the goals of improving the reconstruction performance while tole-rating multiple disk failures and latent sector errors simultaneously. By applying the exclusive OR operations appropriately among supplementary parity, full parity and data units, SPA can reconstruct the data on the failed disks with a fraction of the original overhead that is proportional to the supplementary parity coverage, thus significantly reducing the overhead of data regeneration and decreasing recovery time in parity-based RAID systems. In particular, SPA has two supplementary-parity coverage orientations, SPA Vertical and SPA Diagonal, which cater to user’s different availability needs. The former, which calculates the supplementary parity of a fixed subset of the disks, can tolerate more disk failures and sector errors; whereas, the latter shifts the coverage of supplementary parity by one disk for each stripe to balance the workload and thus maximize the performance of reconstruction during recovery. The SPA with a single supplementary-parity disk can be viewed as a variant of but significantly different from the RAID5+0 architecture in that the former can easily and dynamically upgrade a RAID5 system to a RAID5+0-like system without any change to the data layout of the RAID5 system. Our extensive trace-driven simulation study shows that both SPA orientations can significantly improve the reconstruction performance of the RAID5 system while SPA Diagonal significantly improves the reconstruction performance of RAID5+0, at an acceptable performance overhead imposed in the operational mode. Moreover, our reliability analytical modeling and Sequential Monte-Carlo simulation demonstrate that both SPA orientations consistently more than double the MTTDL of the RAID5 system and improve the reliability of the RAID5+0 system noticeably

    Understanding and Mitigating Overfitting in Prompt Tuning for Vision-Language Models

    Pretrained vision-language models (VLMs) such as CLIP have shown impressive generalization capability in downstream vision tasks with appropriate text prompts. Instead of designing prompts manually, Context Optimization (CoOp) has been recently proposed to learn continuous prompts using taskspecific training data. Despite the performance improvements on downstream tasks, several studies have reported that CoOp suffers from the overfitting issue in two aspects: (i) the test accuracy on base classes first improves and then worsens during training;(ii) the test accuracy on novel classes keeps decreasing. However, none of the existing studies can understand and mitigate such overfitting problems. In this study, we first explore the cause of overfitting by analyzing the gradient flow. Comparative experiments reveal that CoOp favors generalizable and spurious features in the early and later training stages, respectively, leading to the non-overfitting and overfitting phenomena. Given those observations, we propose Subspace Prompt Tuning (SubPT) to project the gradients in back-propagation onto the low-rank subspace spanned by the early-stage gradient flow eigenvectors during the entire training process and successfully eliminate the overfitting problem. In addition, we equip CoOp with a Novel Feature Learner (NFL) to enhance the generalization ability of the learned prompts onto novel categories beyond the training set, needless of image training data. Extensive experiments on 11 classification datasets demonstrate that SubPT+NFL consistently boost the performance of CoOp and outperform the state-of-the-art CoCoOp approach. Experiments on more challenging vision downstream tasks, including open-vocabulary object detection and zero-shot semantic segmentation, also verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.     Downwelling wind, tides, and estuarine plume dynamics

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans 121 (2016): 4245–4263, doi:10.1002/2015JC011475.The estuarine plume dynamics under a downwelling-favorable wind condition were examined in the windy dry season of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) using the PRE primitive-equation Finite-Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM). The wind and tide-driven estuarine circulation had a significant influence on the plume dynamics on both local and remote scales. Specifically, the local effect of downwelling-favorable winds on the plume was similar to the theoretical descriptions of coastal plumes, narrowing the plume width, and setting up a vertically uniform downstream current at the plume edge. Tides tended to reduce these plume responses through local turbulent mixing and advection from upstream regions, resulting in an adjustment of the isohalines in the plume and a weakening of the vertically uniform downstream current. The remote effect of downwelling-favorable winds on the plume was due to the wind-induced estuarine sea surface height (SSH), which strengthened the estuarine circulation and enhanced the plume transport accordingly. Associated with these processes, tide-induced mixing tended to weaken the SSH gradient and thus the estuarine circulation over a remote influence scale.
